Reviews << Washington << Kirkland

Large lot.
When we first arrived at the restuarant, we were warmly greeted and shocked to see that nearly all of the patrons who were already eating were seated at the sushi bar. This was a good sign. What was an even better sign was when the waiter soon greeted other patrons by their first names; it seemed everyone who had come to this restaurant was a regular, if that's even possible. We were nearly the only odd ones out.
Momoya offers your typical sushi staples, but it also showcases a delightful assortment of rolls, salads, and appetizers that utilize general sushi toppings in the most original of ways. From combining ingredients often found in Italian cooking to adding a spicy tomato salsa on top of a deep-fried California roll, Momoya is unique and shows that sushi can be manipulated and still come out on top. There is no pretentiousness here; only a friendly attitude of a chef that clearly just wants to have fun.
But although the Cactus Roll (shrimp, crab, and garlic, wrapped in a bed of fried spinach) and the Dragon Roll (which is really designed and crafted to look like a dragon) may be mighty visually tempting, we're telling you right here right now not to be too mesmerized only by the rolls. Momoya's nigiri zushi and chirashi zushi all use the highest quality of fish, and although the prices are not especially cheap, the portions are generous.
The next time you are in Kirkland, feel free to stop by Momoya's in its little hole in the wall next to Tuesday Morning. The exterior might make you hesitate, but you won't regret it.
Please note that this restaurant review is old; we are still looking for an opportunity to make it out to see what the restaurant is like under its current management!

SUSHI MONSTERS' COMMENTS
Due to the rave review of Momoya from a sushi monster who visited this site, we decided we had to go eat there. Located in an unlikely shopping center in Kirkland, Momoya seems to be quite a place to be on the East Side. When we first arrived at the restuarant, we were warmly greeted and shocked to see that nearly all of the patrons who were already eating were seated at the sushi bar. This was a good sign. Best sushi I ever had
Daughter and Father Night out Posted Jul 07, 2009 by mcjimmy
We went searching the Sushi Monsters web
site to find a good sushi place to try and came across the reviews for Momoya. We were the first customers of the night and had the first seats at the bar. We had a couple of rolls and some nigri, all was very fresh and presented nicely. The chef was very quick and very experienced, not some 16 year old at there first job. Menu was varied but we could not dive in deep with only the two of us. Overall it was a very good experience and we enjoyed the food very much, we will go back! Great eastside sushi Posted May 14, 2009 by Anonymous
I visited Momoya after reading some very impressive Yelp reviews. The restaurant location is very deceiving, it doesn't look inviting from the outside. But once you walk through the door, a fantastic sushi experience is waiting for you.
The owner and his wife are very friendly and the service is great. The sushi is fresh and the flavors are clean. They have a very reasonably priced lunch special but I always get the sushi combo when I'm alone because rolls are too expensive by myself. When I bring friends, we usually order rolls and nigiri for the table and have enjoyed everything I've tried. This is my new favorite eastside sushi restaurant, replacing Sushi In Joy (not much variety) and Izumi (loss of quality). excellent Posted Nov 09, 2008 by jo

WE LOVE MOMOYA!! Posted May 19, 2008 by MOMOYA ROCKS
I have been a regular at Momoya for almost 2 years. I never visited under the previous ownership. We LOVE the rolls. The chef is creative and inventive and brings something new to sushi for us. We LOVE the family that runs the place. (The boys are NOT under age. I don't know where that comment came from.) This place is amazing!
