Umi's Happy Hour is a strange one; it is reserved for the four front tables of the restaurant only. Make a note with your seater as soon as you get to the restaurant. It lasts until 8pm, and, if you can snag a spot, it is worth your time and money.

Umi Sake House is a true gem in the Seattle dining scene. It is hardly a traditional sushi restaurant, but it offers dozens of inventive rolls and fusion entrees with tastes that will make the mouth water. For need of blending in with the rest of Belltown, Umi is slightly club-like but much more intimate; it feels like a high-quality lounge where one can wine and dine with friends without being pestered. Highly recommended for those willing to spend a few extra bucks.

Not really a sushi place

Anyone who frequents downtown will know Umi's, and it's not a sushi restaurant. My advice is to come during happy hour and try some rolls at discounted prices, because otherwise the value is non-existent. The prices are far too high for what you get, and the quality overall isn't that good. Go here to have a drink and hangout, but don't try this place expecting a new sushi restaurant for you and your friends to frequent.

Not worth the $$

What is up with this place. The most expensive
sushi I have ever seen. Who eats sushi with
"frou-frou" things like mango and
jalapenos...yuck! At least they had a small part
of the menu with "regular" choices for purists like
me. There are better and CHEAPER places in
Seattle to try. Not my first choice.

if stomachs could give high fives.....

went here on a whim the other night with a few friends. this is definitely a restaurant where'd you want to dress up a bit--my group showed up in our standard flannel/cut off shorts/generally sloppy attire and were severely under-dressed. i ordered some hamachi and sockeye salmon nigiri as well as an "i love roll", which consisted of hamachi, uni, tobiko, and green onion. perhaps some of the best sushi i have ever eaten, although way out of my typical budget. amazingly fresh fish with impeccable presentation, the hamachi practically melted in my mouth. a four piece roll and four pieces nigiri ran me about 23 dollars. they also have a huge selection of creative, out-of-the-box rolls that is practically impossible to choose from. the atmosphere is very nice and fancy feeling, although can get a bit loud at times. great service. i probably won't find myself going back since the price is so high. umi is a place where your tastebuds will thank you, but your wallet will probably not.

this place is money!!

i am definitely a fan of umi sake house!! my friend has been recommending this place to me for a while but i went there for the first time yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. it was pretty pricy, however, which is not usually my bag of chips, but i actually was not disappointed by a single item that i ordered. that's surprising and relatively rare because more often than not, i'm stuck paying a lot of money for sub-par food. the environment is great as well although i didn't like their lounge-type seats so much... service was initially pretty poor but they made up for it quadruple-fold by being super attentive after the initial delay. so i'm willing to give them a second chance on that! the food is good though. definitely a good treat once in a while!

it's all about the food

i have followed theses chefs for years and they know it all and do it perfectly or not at all.
four different spaces to dine in, a tatami room, couches or a 'front porch' and a typical bar- you pick your atmosphere. they must have a deal with the fish guys because it is always the freshest i have ever eaten.
it never smells 'fishy', exotic rolls and they will make anything you design to eat as a special.
they keep the exotic stuff as they have enough traffic to get thru it.
Uni, Nato whatever.

Highly skilled chefs at the bar and in the back. lots of sake. some exotic beers from Japan as Specials. short wine list but it is ample.

small storefront hides the fact that the restaurant is large and tough for the servers to keep a watchfull eye over the total area,
but the attitud4e is good.
i love the food and am hooked, parking can be toough if you show late.
it is not cheap but the best rarely is.

highly reccomended!
